Overweight and Obesity

Obesity is a complex, serious, chronic, and costly disease that occurs when a person’s weight is higher than what is considered healthy for their height. It is commonly measured using the Body Mass Index (BMI). A BMI between 25 and 29.9 is classified as overweight, while a BMI of 30 or higher is classified as obesity.

Approximately two out of every three adults in the United States are overweight, with a BMI greater than 25, representing about 69% of the population. Additionally, one out of every three adults is obese, with a BMI of 30 or higher, accounting for 36% of the population. If current trends continue, projections estimate that by 2030, nearly half of all men and women in the United States will be obese.

Many factors contribute to excess weight, including dietary patterns, levels of physical activity, sleep habits, social and economic determinants, the use of certain medications, and underlying medical conditions.

Excess weight, especially obesity, negatively affects nearly every aspect of health, from reproductive and respiratory function to memory and mood. Obesity significantly increases the risk of serious and potentially life-threatening conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, and certain types of cancer. It also reduces both quality of life and life expectancy, while increasing individual, national, and global healthcare costs.

In children, obesity is associated with low self-esteem and social challenges, including bullying and stigma.

The good news is that weight loss can reduce many of the health risks associated with obesity. Losing as little as 5–10% of body weight can provide meaningful health benefits for individuals with obesity, even if they never reach their “ideal” weight, and even when weight loss begins later in life.
